Bargain-hunting for a cause

Love shopping a good yard sale? Love giving to charity? Wish you could do both at the same time?

Wish no longer!

This Saturday, October 25, a few local families will be hosting yard sales to benefit Books for Keeps. They will be selling off their unwanted items and donating a portion of all proceeds back to Books for Keeps. It’s as simple as that.

This is the first year for this fundraiser, so we have just a couple of yard sales signed up. They will run from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the following addresses:

125 Wilcox Street, Athens
270 Brookwood Drive, Athens
295 Pebble Creek Drive, Athens

Out of town? Otherwise engaged? No problem! We are inviting folks to use our Facebook event page as a marketplace. Feel free to post items there for sale or peruse the items listed to sell.  List anything you wish to sell there through the end of October and follow up by sending BFK a portion of your sale (suggested 20%).

Instructions for Sellers on Facebook:

Please add only one photo per item to keep photo and description linked. You can continue to add different “views” by uploading photos to the comments under the photo.
Please delete items after they sell, or write the word SOLD in the comments section under your photo. Next, just remit your percentage of your sale to BFK either online or via check. Info on how to send us your donation can be found here at our website.

Feel good about the fact that you just lightened the load at your home and supported BFK!

Instructions for Buyers on Facebook:

Send a private message to the seller to arrange a meeting to exchange money for goods. Enjoy your purchase and [...]

October Book Drive Month is here!

If you haven’t signed up to host a book drive, it’s not too late!

Hosting a book drive is an easy two-step process:

Place an empty box in your garage or your workplace’s lobby.
Email your co-workers, neighbors, family and friends and let them you’re hosting a book drive for Books for Keeps!

That’s it!

Simple, right?! By hosting a book drive, you’ll help us reach an audience that we’ve never reached before, and it’s a great way for people to do a little spring cleaning in October.

If you, your business, your church, or a civic group you belong to would like to host a book drive, please email Merryn at merrynwalker@yahoo.com to sign up and to receive an electronic copy of book drive poster sign!

The annual BFK Book Sale is upon us!

Have you heard? Our annual BFK Book Sale is coming up August 22-25. So, mark the date on your calendars and get ready for our best-stocked, most exciting book sale yet. If you don’t know, the Books for Keeps Book Sale is our biggest fundraiser of the year. We take the donated books that cannot be given to children and we sell them so we can buy more books the kids can use. We’re still looking for a location, so if you know of a vacant space we could use for about two weeks leading up to and during the book sale, let us know. On our wish list for that space: 4,000 to 5,000 square feet, a loading dock, and air conditioning. Anyone with ideas or space can email Leslie: leslie.hale@booksforkeeps.org. But, before we can get in there and sell our fantastic stock of titles, we have to finish sorting through the thousands of donations we’ve received in the past year. If you’re interested in helping, or maybe just getting a sneak peek of the books, our next volunteer book sort will be June 29. Sign up at the link above, or send an email to leslie.hale@booksforkeeps.org. We would love your help! And if you can’t help on June 29, but want to get on the volunteer list for the book sale weekend in August, let us know that too.

Notice anything new?

Check out the top-right side of the blog. We are finally able to accept donations via PayPal, credit or debit card!We use donated funds to purchase the most-wanted, current books – books rarely donated at our book drives. Check this out:We purchased a large quantity of Everybody Hates Chris at a rock-bottom price, and kids were so excited they chose to read during recess. This picture wasn’t staged, folks; it moves me to tears. The kids read the book together, laughed out loud, and discussed as they read. The right book matters. Help us make it happen.

12 books or $24

That’s all it takes to immunize 1 child against summer slide. 12 books or $24.Our 72,000 book goal just got a little easier (we hope): Books for Keeps was just approved as a Scholastic Literacy partner, which means we can buy new, popular books for $1-$2 each. The books the kids want most run closer to $2, which means for $24 we can buy approximately 12 current, popular books – and 1 more child will be less likely to fall prey to the summer slide in 2011.Why 12 books? In the most recent study on preventing summer slide, children who were given 12 books each on the last day of school grew their achievement levels at a rate comparable to attending summer school. We’re targeting 6,000 elementary school children, the majority of whom qualify for the free/reduced-fee lunch program, a poverty indicator.Small numbers like that make our lofty goal seem more achievable. Can you send 12 books or $24? If so, you’re blocking summer slide for 1 child here in Athens. Collect at your office, tell your friends and neighbors.Send your books or donations to Books for Keeps at PO Box 49761 Athens, GA 30604. If you’d like your donation to be tax deductible, make your check payable to Family Connection and put Books for Keeps in the memo line. They’ll earmark the funds for us, and we’ll use it to buy books.12 books or $24. Spread the word.
